Housing & Rental Assistance
Are you having trouble finding affordable housing and need help paying rent? Are you in facing eviction? Our office can answer your housing questions and refer you to local organizations that provide housing assistance. The Department of Housing and Community Development has a guide to obtaining housing assistance with more details and information.

Unemployment Assistance
You may be eligible for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits if you recently lost your job or had your hours reduced significantly. The Department of Unemployment Assistance (DUA) works with MA residents to evaluate their benefits levels.
Unemployment cases are one of the most common constituent cases we receive. If you have not heard from your case manager, or need help appealing a decision, our office is happy to follow up on your case with DUA. Please email claudia.chung@mahouse.gov or call us at 617-722-2070.

Triangle provides assessments, job placement, and ongoing employment supports to both youth and adults. The organization works with referrals from the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC), Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA), and Department of Developmental Services (DDS). Employment Specialists work one-to-one and in small group settings to help each person identify and pursue their short-term and long-term career goals.

Voter Resources
We will be having elections this fall and you can find some important details and deadlines below. If you would like to either register to vote in Massachusetts, or update your voter registration information, you can visit the Secretary of State’s website.
You can also visit their website to register online to vote in-person, or to vote-by-mail. For Malden residents, you can also choose to visit the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall in-person:

Food Assistance
Massachusetts provides several food security programs dedicated to providing health and nutritious food to lower income households. SNAP or Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program is one of the best known programs and is administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA). SNAP benefits include:

Monthly funds on an EBT card for buying food

$40, $60 or $80/month reimbursed to your EBT card when you use your funds to buy local produce through the Healthy Incentives Program (HIP)

Referrals to other kinds of help, like utility discounts, free school meals and discounted admissions to museums and cultural institutions via EBT Card to Culture program
The Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program keeps pregnant and breastfeeding women and kids under 5 years old healthy. You can participate in WIC REGARDLESS OF IMMIGRATION OR CITIZENSHIP STATUS. If you:

Bread of Life is a non-profit organization offering a wide variety of nutritional services including free evening meals, a grocery delivery program, meals for homeless individuals, and a food pantry located at 109 Madison St, Malden, MA.

The Malden YMCA Food Market provides free food for individuals and families that need it. One registration per household is allowed and the food pantry located at 99 Dartmouth St, Malden, MA. Hours of operation are available on the Mystic Valley YMCA website.

Medicare Savings Program
Starting January 2023, Massachusetts will expand eligibility for the Medicare Savings Program from 165% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) to 225%. Over 45,000 seniors will get MSP benefits and qualify for the first time, while over 23,000 low-income seniors will see even further cost relief for their healthcare needs. You can check your eligibility using the chart below!

Fuel Assistance & Utilities
Massachusetts' Fuel Assistance program, also called the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides eligible households with help in paying a portion of winter heating bills.
Attorney General's Office has FAQs and additional tips and information about fuel and energy assistance programs in Massachusetts. You can call their consumer hotline: (617) 727-8400 from Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The Department of Housing and Community Development handles applications for heating and energy assistance. You can apply in person or by phone for LIHEAP.
Malden Residents
If you qualify for LIHEAP, Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) helps pay your winter heating bill by working directly with vendors, and also offers other free assistance services. LIHEAP eligibility is based on your annual income and how many people are in your family. The program is available to homeowners and renters even if you live in non-subsidized housing with heat included in your rent. Your gross family income must be at or below 60% of the Massachusetts median income.
The ABCD Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as Fuel Assistance, is now accepting new applications for assistance with heating bills for those households who have not applied in the past. You now may apply online by following this link: toapply.org/MassLIHEAP
New applicants who live in Malden, Medford, Melrose, Everett, Winchester Woburn or Stoneham, may also choose to apply via telephone. New applicants please call (781) 322-6284.
